Harry Smith makes birthday splash as he reopens Castleton Leisure Centre

Castleton Leisure Centre has officially re-opened for use now further restrictions have ended – and who better to declare the pool open than its oldest swimmer, Harry Smith, on his 88th birthday?
Mr Smith, who turned 88 on Friday (16 April), cut a special banner declaring the pool re-open, before jumping into the water for a long-overdue swim.
The Castleton resident had been swimming up to 40 lengths before lockdown, and he is aiming to build up back to this.
“I’ve been swimming here for years,” Mr Smith, a former president of the Rochdale Cricket and Lacrosse Club, beamed. “As soon as I’m in the water, I don’t notice my arthritis, and I can move my arms.” ....

American pianist Scott Joplin was known as the “King of Ragtime”. The Maple Leaf Rag, one of his most famous compositions, epitomizes the musical style whose defining characteristic is a type of syncopation in which melodic accents fall between metrical beats.
Once upon a time, in lacrosse rinks across Canada, improvisational virtuosos were playing out a different kind of maple leaf rag; theirs was known as the penalty kill rag, and it brought a blend of chaos and beauty to the floor like few other elements of Canada s national summer sport. ....

South African Lacrosse Becomes 69th Member Nation of World Lacrosse

COLORADO SPRINGS World Lacrosse is today welcoming the South African Lacrosse Association as the 69th member of the rapidly growing international federation for men’s and women’s lacrosse.
The application for membership from the South African Lacrosse Association (SALA) was approved by the World Lacrosse (WL) Development Committee, Board of Directors and through a vote of delegates representing WL member-National Governing Bodies.
SALA becomes the fourth World Lacrosse member from the Continent of Africa, joining the Ghana Lacrosse Association, Kenya Lacrosse Association and Uganda Lacrosse Association. In the last six months, the Kenya Lacrosse Association and Uganda Lacrosse Association have been elevated to Full Member status within World Lacrosse, which means National Teams from Kenya and Uganda are now eligible to advance to the medal rounds in World Championship competition and the NGBs will have a voting delegate in ....

Appeals, committees, conflict, letters from politicians, digital drama, a somewhat Hollywood-esque last-ditch effort to save a storied local team from the whim of an “outsider” owner – the move of the Brampton Excelsiors is threatening to out-entertain the on-the-floor product.
The Ontario Lacrosse Association confirmed in a statement Saturday an appeals committee has rescinded the OLA board of governor’s approval of the Excelsiors move to Owen Sound “on the basis that the OLA’s board of directors has the sole authority to rule on franchise transfers.”
