Private homeless hostel revamp announced in Hackney

“This seems to be a reward for failure. The owners of these hostels have made money out of them at the expense of the public purse.”
She added: “What are needed are permanent council social rented homes. Schemes like this do not even paper over the cracks.”
The town hall has said that the leases will help meet record demand for temporary housing for homeless people.
The number of approaches to the council from homeless people seeking help rose 39 per cent in 2018/19 when compared to the previous year, and town hall expenditure on temporary accommodation jumped from £7.38m in 2017 to £10.13m two years later. ....

An invitation to tenants, a Zoom meeting about estate demolition

28 January, 2021
• MORE than 100 social housing estates in London are under threat of demolition, indeed, on some of these estates, demolition is already well under way.
Six of the estates, comprising over 1,700 social rented homes, are in Westminster and include: Church Street Area, Cundy Street, Ebury Bridge, Hall Place, Lilestone and Lisson Green estates.
Most of the social rented homes that are under threat of demolition in London need refurbishing but do not need to be demolished.
Council land is being used to develop a much larger number of homes, many of them simply not being affordable to the existing social housing tenants. ....

Benefit of People Friendly Streets
Tash H, Islington, full name and address supplied, writes:
As Lockdown 3.0 was announced, one of the first things I noticed was the number of people outdoors going for walks and cycle rides. With gyms shut and lockdown restrictions in place, getting outdoors is the main way many people are getting their exercise. For some people, it is currently their only way of having social contact, by meeting one other person to exercise with.
Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs), part of the council’s People Friendly Streets programme, make this so much easier, with quiet streets allowing more space for walking, cycling and playing, while being socially distanced. It’s never been so important to have access to public space, and getting out and about is much more enjoyable in our Low Traffic Neighbourhoods like Canonbury compared with are ....

Joggers ignoring social distancing
Is it safe to mix walkers and joggers together in Raphael Park?
I walk with my wife there and the footpaths are quite narrow, social distancing is possible.
However the joggers do not think social distancing is applicable to them and rush past almost brushing shoulders and exhaling huge plumes of breath over everybody.
They do not obey the 1 metre + rule and are becoming something of a menace to the other park users who for the most part are obeying the rules for public safety.  ....
