Construction Begins on Full-Service Equine Surgical Facility in Patton Township


Construction has begun for a major expansion to a Patton Township equine hospital that will create the region’s only full-service equine surgical facility.
“I’ve been working on since 2016 and I really do feel like I finally found the right group of people, the right township, the right piece of land,” Dr. Catherine Radtke, owner of Abington Equine Hospital, said during a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday morning. “It’s going to come together and I think it’s going to be great.”
Radtke was joined by state Sen. Jake Corman, R-Benner Township, and state Rep. Rich Irvin, R-Spruce Creek Township, who helped facilitate a $370,000 state grant from the Keystone Communities Program for the $2.4 million project. ....

'Nothing Short of Heroic': Community Members, CVIM Celebrate Volunteer COVID-19 Vaccination Efforts


Centre Volunteers In Medicine (CVIM) hosted an event on Saturday morning at Mount Nittany Middle School to celebrate its COVID-19 vaccination efforts.
The organization lauded its volunteers, provided updates on its campaign and reported the total vaccines administered to date. In a THON-style reveal,
CVIM announced it has distributed a total of 21,750 vaccine doses at clinics in Centre County since Jan. 14.
“This effort has been nothing short of heroic…Nearly 20,000 vaccines is an incredible accomplishment and one we can all be proud of,” State College Area School District Board of Directors President Amber Concepcion said. “I would urge every eligible individual in our community to please plan your vaccine to protect yourself and your loved ones.” ....

CVIM, Mount Nittany Health Encourage Community Members to Register for COVID-19 Vaccination Appointments


With all Pennsylvania residents age 16 and older eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, Centre Volunteers in Medicine and Mount Nittany Health are both encouraging community members to sign up for vaccination appointments at their clinics.
Vaccines are administered at no cost and individuals do not need to be current patients of CVIM or Mount Nittany to schedule appointments. Anyone 16 or older can register.
CVIM will offer the Pfizer vaccine at a clinic scheduled for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at Mount Nittany Middle School. Another clinic is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at Mount Nittany Middle School.

Key Pennsylvania senators favor bill opening litigation window for child sex abuse survivors

The state’s highest ranking Republican senator said Wednesday he supports a bill that opens a two-year litigation window for survivors of child sex abuse, signaling a yearslong shift in opinion that could secure the proposal’s passage.
“I’ve gotten to the point where enough is enough,” said President Pro Tempore Jake Corman, R-Benner Township, during a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting. “These poor individuals have suffered the most heinous crime you can imagine.
The committee approved House Bill 951 on a vote of 11-3. The measure allows survivors to sue their abusers and the institutions that employed them for crimes committed against them as children. The policy came out of a 2018 grand jury report into rampant sexual abuse in six of the state’s eight Catholic dioceses. ....

$1.5 Million in State Funding Awarded for Traffic Improvements at Patton Crossing Site


Newly awarded state funding will support an intersection expansion and creation of a new access road at the Patton Crossing mixed-use development site along North Atherton Street.
The Commonwealth Financing Authority on Wednesday awarded $1.54 million to expand the intersection at North Atherton and Woodycrest streets, state Sen. Jake Corman, R-Benner Township, said in a statement on Wednesday.
The project will create a four-way intersection, with a new six-lane access road into Patton Crossing opposite of Woodycrest Street. Work also will include replacing traffic signals, adding sidewalks creating and lengthening turning lanes and other improvements to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow. ....
