State Rep. Fentrice Driskell first debated in the Florida House chamber when she was 17 and a student at Lake Gibson High School in Lakeland. Driskell went to Tallahassee the summer before her senior year to participate in Florida Girls State, an educational program for selected rising seniors that simulates the functions of state government. During the weeklong session, Driskell met Florida’s governor, the late Lawton Chiles, a Lakeland native. In an indication of what lay ahead, fellow participants elected Driskell governor of the student delegation. “It completely changed my life,” Driskell said last week. “Before that, I thought I wanted to be an engineer. But after that experience, I fell in love with government. I decided to study it in college, which I did. I decided I would go to law school so that I could learn the language of government.” ....
Contentious measures captured most of the attention and media coverage in the recently concluded session of the Florida Legislature. Polk County’s legislative delegation helped deliver passage of the most controversial bills, which were among those sought by Gov. Ron DeSantis and Republican leaders. The county’s three senators and five representatives, all Republicans, supported an “anti-riot” bill, restrictions on voting procedures and a bill blocking transgender girls and women from playing on female sports teams. Out of the spotlight, though, Polk’s lawmakers sponsored plenty of bills that passed through the Legislature and now need only DeSantis’ signature to become law. ....
Bell said she had to be hospitalized for a day and received treatment to improve her breathing. “I was like, ‘Oh no, don’t put me on a vent, ” she said. “That’s how bad it was. I couldn’t breathe. I felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest. It felt like I had COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and I’ve never smoked a day in my life.” Bell said House Speaker Chris Sprowls, R-Palm Harbor, offered to have other members carry her bills if she couldn’t return to Tallahassee. She praised her staff members, Anne Bell, Tommy Griffin and Kara Lucas, for helping her stay abreast with what was happening in the Legislature. ....
