Dozens of residents from around the Thumb offered comment this week on anything from their own views of the region’s communities of interest to how those communities should be grouped together  to the state commission tasked with redrawing Michigan’s political boundaries
In many cases, speakers disagreed on what factors members of the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission should consider before they finalize new lines for more than 100 congressional, state House and state Senate districts.
Although they’re asking the Michigan Supreme Court for a longer timeline, the commission currently must finalize new boundaries with public input by Nov 1. ....

Michigan residents donated hundreds of toys, clothes and other items to unaccompanied migrant children being housed in the state under a federal program.
A donation drive organized by state Rep. Mari Manoogian, D-Birmingham, and Fems for Democracy, a nonprofit political advocacy group, resulted in an outpouring of generosity from residents across the state. Volunteers said they’re trying to make life a little more comfortable for children who traveled thousands of miles without their parents.
“These are unaccompanied children sent here to find a better life,” said Gina Keller, a board member with Fems for Democracy. “I would just hope that if I was in their shoes, somebody on the receiving end would show kindness and support to my children. These children are caught up in the system through no fault of their own, so we just w ....

Derek Chauvin case: Michigan reacts to guilty verdicts


Justice and relief.
That was the message from metro Detroit and Michigan after the jury s guilty verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin, a white former Minneapolis police officer  who was charged with murder in the death of George Floyd, a Black man. 
A flood of reactions, from pastors, police and politicians, expressed sadness, condolences and hope. They offered their views on why America watched the trial so closely and what needs to happen to prevent other tragedies like it.
