A Song and a Prayer

A Song and a Prayer      By Riki Goldstein | April 27, 2021
Rebbetzin Rochel Rakow faced tragedy with a siddur in her hands and song on her lips
There’s a beautiful picture of Rebbetzin Rochel Rakow taken on her final visit to Eretz Yisrael, in May 2019. She s seated serenely in her wheelchair, in a Meah Shearim store, its walls lined with leather siddurim. In her hand is a gigantic bag of freshly popped popcorn. Together with a six-year-old grandchild, the nonagenarian great-grandmother is choosing a gift. The most precious gift ever  a siddur. The child in the picture is named Hindy, after the Rebbetzin’s sister, who survived the Holocaust alongside her, and the gift they’re selecting together is the indispensable item that Rebbetzin Rakow always had within arm’s reach, during the Holocaust years a siddur, her connection to tefillah; it was this that she passed on to her family. Rebbetzin Rakow was the devoted wife ....

When the time came to build a mikveh in Lakewood shortly after Rav Aharon Kotler’s petirah in 1962, that all-important mission was entrusted to a talmid for whom the Lakewood rosh yeshivah had forseen a shining future as a moreh hora’ah for Klal Yisrael: Rav Moshe Heinemann, then a Beth Medrash Govoha yungerman in his mid-twenties.
As we sit together in the conference room of the STAR-K, the Baltimore-based kashrus certification agency Rav Moshe Heinemann has led for half a century, he recalls his visit to the venerable Rebbe Yoel of Satmar to discuss the mikveh project. “I asked the Rebbe, ‘What’s the best way to make a mikveh?’ and he replied with customary wit: ‘The best way is not to make it based on the Shulchan Aruch.’ After a pau ....

They were a group of several dozen Moroccan teenagers on an open lorry, traveling down an English highway, singing aloud in the August sunshine. Arriving in the beautiful Lake District National Park, they’d find a scenic but sheltered spot and set up their tents for camp. Leading the group was a middle-aged, European-born rosh yeshivah, with a long beard, big smile, and overflowing heart. Of course, he would help his boys pitch the tents. He had bought them the army surplus tents and sleeping bags. He would take ....

Jewish History in a Bottle: An Interview With Mr. Feish Herzog | Jewish Culture

Jewish History in a Bottle: An Interview With Mr. Feish Herzog

The story of Klal Yisrael’s glories, challenges, and perseverance is often presented by focusing on a particular event or period. While it may appear an untraditional vehicle, the tale of the Herzog family and the empire of wine and food companies they have established seems equally apt at capsulizing part of the story of the modern history of the Jewish People.
After decades of leading a prominent spirits business in Vrbové, Slovakia (about an hour by car, north of Pressburg, today Bratislava), the family suffered several close brushes with death during the Holocaust, only to miraculously survive and replant themselves in America, where they went on to establish one of the nation’s largest kosher food and beverage businesses. Beginning as a small winery on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Kedem’s growth and diversifi ....

In desperation, Raphael came to me and begged me to find him something to do

As a caterer, most of Raphael’s work disappeared when COVID arrived, and he closed down.
This left Raphael with too much free time and too few responsibilities.
Raphael and his wife lived in an empty nest, and he needed to be busy. Raphael attempted to learn more Torah, and indeed he took advantage of shiurim available on Zoom. Nevertheless, Raphael still had a lot of time to fill. In desperation, Raphael came to me and begged me to find him something to do.
“Rebbi, I am 64 years old,” he told me, tears running down his cheeks. “All I know how to do is cater. I can never see rebuilding my business. I have just enough money to live, and honestly, I don’t have the zitzfleish to sit and learn more than one hour a day. What am I to do? I don’t have money to run a tzedakah fund, and I don’t have the kop to shteig. What am I going to do?!” ....
