PGCMLS awarded national recognition

The Prince Georgeâs County Memorial Library System has strengthened its role as a national leader among public libraries with its efforts to serve the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognized with a 2020 Innovation Award from Urban Libraries Council and two new community engagement grants from Maryland Humanities and Zoobean, respectively, the libraryâs potential for having a positive impact in the community is expanding significantly.
The libraryâs work since March 2020 has focused on essential services and advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism through programs, resources, and community engagement. Staff from all departments, the Board of Library Trustees, Friends groups, and the PGCMLS Foundation have each played a role in this effort, which aligns with the Libraryâs new vision: âWe provide a collaborative foundation within the community for all Prince Georgians to create the world they want to see.â ....

Los Altos City Councilwoman Lynette Lee Eng faced direct criticism during this week’s council meeting from several public speakers who believed she falsely claimed to have been threatened by a member of Justice Vanguard, a local racial justice organization, in a council meeting last month.

The public comment session on nonagendized items at the Tuesday s (Dec. 15) meeting turned into a 30-minute back-and-forth, as others later called in to defend Lee Eng.
The issue stemmed from the Nov. 24 council meeting, after Lee Eng didn’t support adding a third-party auditor to take in complaints against the police department. She then claimed she had received threatening messages from members of Justice Vanguard that caused her to be concerned for her and her family’s safety. ....

Prince George’s County libraries are shutting down their curbside services for a month because of the local surge in coronavirus cases.
The service will be suspended Dec. 21 through Jan. 12, and all library buildings will be closed. Book drops will be closed and mobile and 3D printing will be unavailable.
Customers still will be able to check out ebooks, audiobooks and on-demand virtual programs. They can place hold requests on physical materials during the suspension, but the requests will not be processed until the buildings reopen. ....
