Alzheimerâs awareness
COVID-19 has dominated headlines, but unfortunately, other health-related concerns have not disappeared. The month of June is Alzheimerâs and Brain Awareness Month, with the goal of shining a light on all of the families dealing with this disease. There are 690,000 people diagnosed with Alzheimerâs in California, and that number is expected to grow by over 20% in the next five years.
This disease impacts the whole family. Caregivers in California provided over 884 million hours of unpaid care last year alone.
As a caregiver to my mom, who is suffering from this disease, I have tremendous empathy for all families who have experienced or are currently experiencing Alzheimerâs. The quarantine that seniors in care facilities had to endure for their safety against COVID-19 last year accelerated her decline from Alzheimerâs, so this is an especially fraught year for families managing this disease.
Local communities plan to celebrate Juneteenth with sunshine, talks and great food Here s what s planned
