Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway City Council recorded a €160,000 end of year surplus despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The figures were revealed at this week’s local authority meeting, where councillors unanimously adopted the council’s 2020 annual financial statement as presented by the finance department.
Head of Finance Declan Smyth told this week’s meeting that the surplus enjoyed by the council last year was down to the extensive Government support it received throughout 2020 and into 2021.
According the report, the local authority collected 61% of rates last year, compared to 83% in 2019 and 81% in 2018, however, a significant amount was recouped through the Government’s Rates Waiver Scheme. ....

World-renowned fiddler Frankie Gavin has performed a lament in Temple Bar to mark one year since the pubs were forced to close due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Mr Gavin was joined by piper Louise Mulcahy on the empty cobbled streets of the cultural quarter, ahead of St Patrick’s Day, to highlight the devastating impact of the pandemic.
The pubs, cafes, shops and streets of the cultural quarter would normally be packed with tourists in the run up to St Patrick’s Day. ....

€131m budget gambles on availability of supports from government

Staff at Wexford County Council s Department of Finance had the unenviable task of presenting some kind of coherent draft budget plan for the coming year to elected members last week as the local authority attempts to navigate the choppy waters of Covid-19. In a lot of ways, the 2021 budget is a shot in the dark and gambles heavily on government supports being forthcoming.
This year s budget plans for expenditure of just over €131 million, an increase of €3.5m on the 2020 budget, while the predicted income stands at €89.2m, leaving an excess expenditure over income of €41.8m.
Back in March, the virus hit the country with a thud, costing millions out of council finances over a very short period. As a result, the budget for 2021, Head of Finance Annette O Neill says, is completely dependent on government supports being made available. ....
