Council 'not considering' freezing parking fees during current lockdown

Tempers flared a little at last week s county council meeting on the subject of parking charges. Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Sheehan called for the immediate abandonment of parking charges in town centres across the county for the duration of Level 5 lockdown, similar to what we had in the initial lockdown.
Director of Services Eamonn Hore said that, the initial abandonment of parking charges was called for by the Taoiseach. He said there had been no such call this time and at the moment, we re not considering it .
Cllr Sheehan wasn t happy with this though and formally proposed to abandon parking charges, a call seconded by party colleague Cllr Lisa McDonald. ....

€131m budget gambles on availability of supports from government

Staff at Wexford County Council s Department of Finance had the unenviable task of presenting some kind of coherent draft budget plan for the coming year to elected members last week as the local authority attempts to navigate the choppy waters of Covid-19. In a lot of ways, the 2021 budget is a shot in the dark and gambles heavily on government supports being forthcoming.
This year s budget plans for expenditure of just over €131 million, an increase of €3.5m on the 2020 budget, while the predicted income stands at €89.2m, leaving an excess expenditure over income of €41.8m.
Back in March, the virus hit the country with a thud, costing millions out of council finances over a very short period. As a result, the budget for 2021, Head of Finance Annette O Neill says, is completely dependent on government supports being made available. ....

Tempers flare over provision for homeless at Budget meeting

TEMPERS flared on the subject of homelessness at last week s Budget Meeting of Wexford County Council. The subject arose when the proposed budget showed an apparent decrease in funding of just over €22,000 on last year s allocation to administration of homeless services.
Sinn Féin councillor Tom Forde said that this was a source of great concern at a time when we re in the middle of a housing crisis .
The situation is not getting any better, he said. I don t see how we can justify a drop in this area.
Head of Finance Annette O Neill said that the budget would see no reduction of the current homeless services provided by the council and essentially it was being maintained at the same level. ....
