Doris Koop, executive director of the Vision Impaired Resource Network, enjoys the smell of pine trees and the natural sounds in Vimy Ridge Park during her lunch hour recently. Research in a growing scientific field called ecotherapy has shown a strong correlation between time spent in nature and reduced anxiety and depression.
It’s no secret that being in nature is good for you. Walking in a park boosts your well-being, sunlight can put an extra spring in your step and being near water can be ever-so-calming.

As temperatures warmed last spring, Montrealers flocked to Mount Royal Park. Trapped inside – first by winter, then by lockdowns – the city’s residents were desperate for nature. The winding trails, lush forests and steep escarpments of Mount Royal offered an ideal remedy for their cabin fever. And as the pandemic has dragged on, the 700-acre green space has become such a popular destination that the city has repeatedly closed its parking lots to limit access during peak periods. ....

 According to a research analysis in April 2020 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the loud rushing noise of the wind through a stretch of forest, birds alarming to one another as they alight on tree branches, the burble of a brook over a rocky bed - these are the types of sounds that are not just calming, but could have heartfelt health and well-being advantages.

Health Benefit of Natural Sound 
For the analysis, the scientists viewed 18 studies researching the health importance of natural sound; participants of the study listened to recorded outdoor sounds in an environment of a laboratory. Participants made reports on less stress and improved health results, like reduced pain, after listening to recordings of nature sounds.  ....

The whoosh of wind through a stretch of forest, birds calling to one another as they land on branches, the gurgle of a brook over a rocky bed these are the kinds of sounds that are not only calming, but could have profound health and well-being benefits, according to a research review in the April 2021

For the review, the researchers looked at 18 studies investigating the health benefits of natural sound; study participants listened to recordings of outdoor sounds in laboratory settings. Participants reported less stress and improved health outcomes, like decreased pain, after listening to recordings of nature sounds. ....
