Manatee County Commission appoints Hopes to be administrator. | East County

The Manatee County Commission appointed Scott Hopes as county administrator May 25 by a 5-2 vote, removing the interim tag from his title.
Commissioners said the move essentially creates a tryout for Hopes, citing clauses in the contract they said would provide easy outs if they later decide he is not the right person for the job. George Kruse and Reggie Bellamy cast the dissenting votes.
The contract includes a 30-day notice for termination with no severance pay and an opportunity to revisit the contract Dec. 1. If Hopes’ contract is not extended at that date, his term will end June 1, 2022, and commissioners will search for a new administrator in the meantime. ....

Hours after he was hired to the interim position on April Fools Day, Hopes helped the county declare a local state of emergency in response to the breach at the former Piney Point fertilizer processing facility and spent his first few weeks on the job at the helm of the county s response.
Every commissioner has spoken favorably of Hope s performance during that incident, a sentiment echoed by community members during public comment at recent meetings.

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (WWSB) - For the second consecutive year, Manatee County residents will have an opportunity to receive important preparation information for the 2021 Hurricane Season directly from county commissioners and public safety experts.
Each of Manatee County’s seven county commissioners will host a video conference with Emergency Management Chief Steve Litschauer and Public Safety Director Jacob Saur beginning May 24.
In addition to the seven town halls, three Manatee County cities will host similar town halls with Litschauer and Saur. After officials relay preparation tips, lines will be open for questions from the public. ....

World Direct Shipping, a cargo carrier that imports fruits and vegetables, sugar, appliances and household products to the U.S. from Mexico, expanded its operations at Palmetto s Port Manatee this week by adding a third company-owned vessel to its fleet.
The company, which launched at Port Manatee in 2014 with a single vessel on one weekly service, on Wednesday christened the M/V Queen B III, the latest addition to World Direct Shipping s fleet. The ship, which is 590 feet long, can carry as many 1,800 20-foot equivalents, almost three times the maximum capacity of either of the company s other ships, M/V Queen B and M/V Queen B II. ....

Manatee County Commissioner Kevin Van Ostenbridge told a story at the county’s April 15 land use meeting to add some perspective to a land amendment that would allow development beyond the county’s Future Development Area Boundary line under limited circumstances.
“The camel puts his nose under the tent,” Van Ostenbridge said. “And then the camel gets his head under the tent if you don t do anything about it. Next thing you know, the camel is in the tent. … If this property is allowed east of the line, then the camel’s nose is under the tent, right?
