PALMETTO, Fla. (WWSB) - Containerized cargo traffic through Port Manatee has exploded in the last six months, with port officials reporting a 74% increase above the same period a year ago.
“Rapidly escalating volumes of both of Port Manatee’s primary containerized cargo carriers – World Direct Shipping and Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc. – are propelling the unprecedented activity,” Carlos Buqueras, Port Manatee’s executive director, said in a news release.
An all-time-high 67,675 twenty-foot-equivalent container units (TEUs) moved through Port Manatee during the first half of the port’s current fiscal year, up 73.7% over the prior first-half record of 38,954 TEUs, established in the six months ended March 31, 2020. ....

PALMETTO, FL – Port Manatee’s vibrant containerized cargo trade keeps soaring to record heights, with the number of container units crossing port docks in the six months ended March 31 rising nearly 74 percent over the comparable year-earlier period.
An all-time-high 67,675 20-foot-equivalent container units moved through Port Manatee during the first half of the port’s current fiscal year, up 73.7 percent over the prior first-half record of 38,954 TEUs, established in the six months ended March 31, 2020.
“Rapidly escalating volumes of both of Port Manatee’s primary containerized cargo carriers – World Direct Shipping and Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc. – are propelling the unprecedented activity,” said Carlos Buqueras, Port Manatee’s executive director. “Port Manatee is clearly on pace to shatter its full-fiscal-year record of 88,466 TEUs, set in the 12-month period ended Sept. 30, 2020.” ....

No doubt there will be plenty of political blaming in the wake of the Piney Point leak that Manatee County commissioners were negligent. For the truth, just watch their Jan. 26 meeting.
As the drama subsides around Manatee County’s environmental emergency at the old Piney Point phosphate mine, no doubt we can expect the political fallout to equal, if not surpass, the environmental fallout.
Out-of-power forces always love a crisis and a disaster to blame on those in power.
Thankfully, the leaking of contaminated water from a deteriorating containment wall did not create the historic human and environmental catastrophe it could have. ....

A leak in a contaminated reservoir has caused evacuations in Manatee County, Florida.
A second possible leak was spotted in the reservoir on Monday morning, but officials later said it was not a leak.
Officials said engineers were installing 20 emergency pumps to mitigate the danger.
Engineers determined that an anomaly spotted by an infrared drone in a contaminated Florida reservoir was not a possible second leak, state officials announced Monday.
There have been news reports of a second area of seepage from the east wall of the NGS-South compartment at Piney Point, according to the announcement from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. These reports are unsubstantiated. ....
