Bordeaux Index reports sales of US$125m in 2020

Fine wine and spirit merchant Bordeaux Index has reported total sales in 2020 of US$125 million (£90.8m), with “strong performances… despite the challenges of the Covid pandemic”.
The results were particularly driven by “the intensity of the buying in Asia”, said founder and CEO Gary Boom, with the merchant seeing a “resurgence” in trade across the region in the second half of the year.
Buying was “frenetic” at the top of the market for top Bordeaux and Burgundy labels among both existing customers and new buyers too.
The merchant also noted a 60% increase in the number of new accounts on its LiveTrade platform, with collectors and investors picking up on the stability of fine wine prices amid the volatility of other assets last year. ....

Château du Tertre sold to Alsatian winemakers

AJ Domaines has announced the sale of Margaux estate Château du Tertre with the Helfrich family, founders of Les Grands Chais de France, set to take over winemaking operations at the estate.
The property is believed to have been acquired by a French insurance group.
Financial details of the sale were not disclosed, du Tertre was previously owned by the Jelgersma family which also owns Château Giscours also in Margaux and Caiarossa in Italy.
Alexander van Beek, managing director of the three properties, commented: “Château du Tertre is an estate with magnificent potential. The Albada Jelgersma family wants it to stand on his own two feet from now on, for the good of the estate and that of its teams. A new chapter has begun!” ....

Benjamin de Rothschild dies aged 57

Benjamin de Rothschild, the scion of the Edmond de Rothschild banking legacy and wine estates around the world, has died of a suspected heart attack aged 57.
Benjamin took over the running of his father Edmond’s empire in 1997 and had a great love of boats, motor racing and wine.
The Edmond de Rothschild group’s viticultural holdings span France, New Zealand and South America as well as a joint projects with the Rupert family in South Africa and Vega Sicilia in Rioja, many of which came about through his own willingness to forge new connections with other families worldwide. ....

Whisky.Auction to offer Revolutionary and Napoleonic era Cognac

Online spirits auctioneer Whisky.Auction will offer five bottles of Cognac at its next sale that span the time period from the American War of Independence to the First World War.
The bottles of Cognac from 1777, 1802, 1812, 1906 and 1914 will be offered at the next auction which will begin on 31 January and run until 9 February.
The bottles have been sourced from the private collection of Jacques Hardy, a member of the Cognac producing Hardy family, and which were purchased from him by a collector in 2003.
Each of the vintages have well-documented stories guaranteeing their provenance. The 1777 for example was distilled at Domaine de la Vie in Grande Champagne – an estate that still exists today – and aged in oak for 100 years before being transferred to a demijohn and then bottled in 1936. Jacques’ uncle gave 12 bottles each to Jacques and his brothers. The brothers drank their ....

Shop Cuvée offers free Vinho Verde to the nation

UK independent retailer Shop Cuvée is offering a free bottle of its best-selling Vinho Verde with every order over £20 – while stocks last – after defying the highs and lows of the pandemic over the past year to sell tens of thousands of bottles of natural wine.
North London-based restaurant and now bottle shop Top/Shop Cuvée has been a standout success of the last year.
When the on-trade was shut down during the first lockdown last spring, owners Brodie Marsh and Max Venning turned their restaurant, Top Cuvée, into a bottle shop with an online retail arm called Shop Cuvée, which in turn has led to them opening an actual shop just around the corner to the original site. ....
