July 26, 1843: The Jonesborough Whig and Independent Journal advised readers that âDr. J.F. Cowan respectfully tenders his services to the citizens of Leesburg and vicinity, in the various departments of his profession. Residence at his Motherâs Farm, two miles South West of Leesburg.â
Jonesborough was spelled that way in 1843. Leesburg is a community in rural Washington County.
July 26, 1884: According to The Comet, âProf. E.E. Barnard of Nashville discovered a new comet on the night of the 16th.â
July 26, 1888: The Comet opined, âIf you are blessed with an education, or if you are regretting the fact that you are not, go out to the polls Monday and vote âFor Tax For School Purposes.â â

July 11, 1872: The Herald and Tribune reported, âOn last Thursday, the new Hotel at Johnson City, was struck by lightning. Several persons were severely shocked, but no one seriously injured. The lightning struck several other points in the city and vicinity.â
The Herald and Tribune was, and still is, is a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way on the masthead of the paper in 1872. Inside the pages of the paper, readers could also see the town spelled as Jonesboroâ.
July 11, 1906: The Chattanooga Daily Times, with a dateline from Johnson City, reported on a new industry.
âA charter for the Watauga Knitting Mills has been secured with L. Whitney Wood, Frank Taylor, L.P. Wood, T.A. Cox and E.J. Vaught as charter members.â

June 10, 1886: The Comet reported, âIt is said that Col. Yocum has the finest field of wheat near Johnson City or in Washington county (sic). It was drilled in at the proper time and supplied with an abundance of wheat fertilizer.â
June 10, 1893: Readers of The Comet learned news of several area citizens. âCapt. D.S. McIntyre and C.H. Jennings returned on No. 6 yesterday evening from Greeneville.â
âLouis D. Gump returned yesterday evening from a few weeksâ stay in Chicago and the great Worldâs Fair.â
âDr. Geo. H. Zim-merman, of Cranberry, was in the city a few hours yesterday, being en route to Virginia.â
