July 11, 1872: The Herald and Tribune reported, “On last Thursday, the new Hotel at Johnson City, was struck by lightning. Several persons were severely shocked, but no one seriously injured. The lightning struck several other points in the city and vicinity.”
The Herald and Tribune was, and still is, is a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way on the masthead of the paper in 1872. Inside the pages of the paper, readers could also see the town spelled as Jonesboro’.
July 11, 1906: The Chattanooga Daily Times, with a dateline from Johnson City, reported on a new industry.
“A charter for the Watauga Knitting Mills has been secured with L. Whitney Wood, Frank Taylor, L.P. Wood, T.A. Cox and E.J. Vaught as charter members.” ....

May 8, 1868: According to The East Tennessee Union Flag, “The Ministerial Association of the Methodist E. Church for the Jonesboro District will organize in the town of Jonesboro’ on Thursday the 21st of May at 11 o’clock, A.M., and will be protracted over the following Sunday. Ministers and laymen, and the public generally, are cordially invited to attend.”
The East Tennessee Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way on the masthead. In the pages of the newspaper, however, it was spelled that way, as well as Jonesboro and Jonesboro’, as above.
May 8, 1890: The Comet reported, “Johnson City is to have an ice factory that will make 30 tons of ice daily and it is to be built at once. W.J. Graham left Monday for Asheville to see an agent about the machinery. It wilt (sic) probably be located in the Proctor Land Company’s addition. April 11, 1889: “The Johnson City Medical Society called a meeting yesterday and elected Dr. E.S. Miller, Sr., and Dr. S.H. Toy delegates in the meeting of the State Society,” according to The Comet.

Feb. 7, 1901: The Comet carried a note of thanks for recent expressions of bereavement. “Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Hampton desire to thank their friends for their kindness in assisting and comforting them in their bereavement caused by the loss of their son, Harold. They wish to especially thank those who sent flowers, those who helped them at their home, the pastor and choir of the Watauga Avenue Presbyterian church, and those who so kindly prepared the church so beautifully for the service.” ....
