I am appalled at the behavior of certain members of the Dunkirk Common Council. What has happened to civility and common courtesy?
The animosity between the council and the mayor is on display for all to see and read about. Meanwhile, the growth of the city has been put on hold so that they can continue their tirades. No one wants to listen to rational arguments if it goes against what they deem is the best action. There is no discussion, just harsh words and attacks on individuals.
It is no wonder that Rebecca Wurster left. She was the best thing that had happened to the city. She found money for projects and development of the city was wonderful to see. Apparently, those days are gone. ....

Common Council’s reductions to the Dunkirk Local Development Corp. could put the agency in jeopardy in 2021. According to Rebecca Wurster, city planning and development director, at least $15,000 is needed for operating costs.
“If the council does not approve the additional $15,000, this board will have to think about what happens to those properties in the future,” Wurster said. “My biggest concern is that the DLDC’s operating account doesn’t get that money and the operating account runs out and then we can’t pay the taxes and then the DLDC goes into foreclosure with these properties and the city doesn’t want to take them on; it just looks irresponsible on all levels.” ....

Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas had someone in mind to replace outgoing develoment director Rebecca Wurster. Without naming the individual, Rosas said the candidate was someone who is qualified and experienced.
On Thursday, however, that individual withdrew his name after Rosas was met with opposition over the potential appointmet from Dunkirk Common Council.
Despite the Dec. 1 meeting where council allowed for walk-in resolutions regarding the $24 million budget which goes against city policy, members would not be as forgiving if Rosas attempted that same maneuver.
Rosas admitted frustration with not being able to have a second Common Council member sponsor the resolution naming the individual. Neither council members Don Williams Jr., James Stoyle or Nancy Nichols would back the proposal that had the support of Martin Bamonto. ....

Rebecca Wurster announced Wednesday she is leaving the city of Dunkirk development department.
A key member of Mayor Wilfred Rosas’ administration is moving on. City of Dunkirk Planning and Development Director Rebecca Wurster will be taking the job as planning director with Chautauqua County.
“I have decided to take a position with Chautauqua County, they offered me a position there,” Wurster announced at the Dunkirk Land Development Corp. meeting Wednesday. “It was a hard decision, I love the city of Dunkirk, I love the work that I’ve been doing here for the last four-and-a-half years, Dunkirk is my second home.” ....
