[email protected] OBSERVER Photo by M.J. Stafford This historic monument is targeted for a move closer to the city pier. In May 1851, Dunkirk was largely isolated from the world. The only way to get out of town was on a boat at the harbor, or on dirt roads almost impassable with mud in wet weather and full of ankle- and axle- breaking buggy ruts in dry times. Then the railroad came, and everything changed. On May 15, 1851, a train of the New York and Erie Railroad inaugurated the local rail line, ushering in decades of industrial growth. A monument for that event sits almost unnoticed in a small lot at the corner of Main and Ruggles streets. Now, the Dunkirk Historical Society wants it at a much more visible location: In the median next to the Boardwalk sign on the pier, facing Lake Shore Drive. ....
After an incident, Vader and his owners have been banned from the city dog park. DUNKIRK As the Dunkirk Common Council considers the possibility of banning certain participants, a dog and owner who have found themselves profiled over the last few weeks are Vader, a shepherd and husky mix, and his owner, Gary Miller. Earlier in April, Miller and Vader had an incident occur at the Dunkirk Dog Park on Main Street Extension with dog owner Jade Lowe, and her dog, Corvus, a black lab mix, that has caused a stir over the last few weeks. “Corvus and I had shown up at the dog park, there was another dog there and a couple, but we didn’t think much of it,” Lowe told the OBSERVER. “We went to the other fenced-in area because I didn’t know this dog or how he played with others. They asked me some questions about Corvus, if he was friendly with other dogs. … There was a shift in the air and then I heard the growling and then Vader was on top of Corvus and he would n ....

Apr 24, 2021 Inaction by Dunkirk Common Council in December led to one potential development director to withdraw their name in December. That person obviously did not want to deal with the politics or some of the hostility that has been evident in the last 15 months. However, the most recent action of delaying the appointment of Jill Meaux by removing the interim title from the position is just one more example of micromanaging by the elected officials. On Tuesday, council decided to table any action. Most said they wanted to meet with Meaux before making any decisions. “I want to see if we can table this until I get a better handle on some of this stuff,” Third Ward Councilman James Stoyle stated. “I want to meet with you … about some situations.” ....
Thirty years ago 1991 Upon the recommendation of Mayor Greg Krauza and Councilman Don Brisky, the Dunkirk Common Council rejected a proposal to build single-family townhouses on land now used for the Pangolin Street ball diamond. At the same time, however, the council made it clear the city plans to pursue some sort of development for that land in the future. The current proposal was rejected because it was felt 26 units were too many for that site. Forty years ago 1981 A press conference has been scheduled which will confirm a rumor that has kept local sports fans buzzing for several weeks the Buffalo Bills will hold their training camp at Fredonia State University College. The official announcement of what is believed to be a one-year agreement will be made in the office of FSUC President Dr. Dallas K. Beal. ....
