More than a dozen communities recovering from Hurricane Michael are getting another round of federal disaster relief funding to help make their stormwater, sewage and water infrastructure more resilient.
Gov. Ron DeSantis announced 22 communities would get roughly $111 million for infrastructure projects during a press conference in Panama City Beach on Thursday.
“We want to get this long-term resiliency funding out to Hurricane Michael-affected communities as quickly as possible,” DeSantis said. “Now these are not immediate response funds. They are designed to take a little longer to go because these projects are a little longer-lasting.” ....

Panama City Beach, Fla. – Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced that more than $111 million has been awarded to 22 communities through the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s (DEO) Rebuild Florida General Infrastructure Repair Program for communities impacted by Hurricane Michael. The program, administered by DEO, is designed to provide funding for local governments to strategically rebuild and harden infrastructure in order to prevent or reduce losses from future disasters.
“Hurricane Michael caused catastrophic damage to Northwest Florida and we remain one-hundred percent committed to helping these communities rebuild and recover stronger than before,” ....

Chipola College held a press conference April 28 to announce the award of a $1.7 million grant to support the college’s welding and building construction programs. The grant funds will be used to expand the programs to support Hurricane Michael recovery efforts pertaining to residential and commercial construction.
Funds for the grant are part of the Rebuild Florida Workforce Recovery Training Program: Hurricane Michael project, administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

Our new Building Construction program is helping to train workers to rebuild homes and businesses devastated by the hurricane. 'Rebuilding' Florida Keys is a slow process


A state program set up in 2018 to help people whose homes were damaged or destroyed in Hurricane Irma in 2017 has been plagued by delays and has only completed one project in the Florida Keys to date.
The state Department of Economic Opportunity launched the Rebuild Florida program in September 2018 to help workers and their families rebuild their homes after Hurricane Irma. The program is designed to pay for significant repairs of homes for people who did not have insurance or enough insurance, did not receive federal disaster funding and do not have the funds to complete work on their homes. ....
