JACKSONVILLE, Fla. While community balloting on name changes has ended for five Duval County schools, only the first week of voting has wrapped up for the last four named after Confederate leaders or those responsible for killing or removing Native American populations.
Local activists in favor of the name changes say Jacksonville’s participation in the process, especially at Robert E. Lee High School has been steady. ....

Accidental shootings plague Jacksonville; woman killed by neighbor


A 47-year-old Jacksonville woman who was shot and killed Sunday by apparent accidental gunfire from nearby will be buried Monday, according to family friends.
The shooting comes on the heels of multiple other accidental discharges of firearms that have left children and adults dead or critically injured. Jacksonville has seen at least 15 victims of accidental shootings since the beginning of 2020 and three in four days this month, according to Times-Union records.
Jennifer Edelen s funeral will be at noon at Crystal Springs Baptist Church at 1320 S. Chaffee Road, followed by burial at Jacksonville Memory Gardens on Blanding Boulevard in Orange Park. ....

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Northside Coalition of Jacksonville and local students plan to host a news conference Friday morning ahead of the Jacksonville City Council and Duval County School Board joint meeting.
The event is designed to influence the school board to rename some public schools that have Confederate ties.
Ben Frazier of the Northside Coalition says local state and national organizations have now endorsed the local effort to change the names of schools in Duval County that honor confederates.  ....

Young people in Jacksonville are getting the vaccine, here's what they have to say


For millennials and Gen-Z vaccine recipients in Jacksonville, access to the COVID-19 vaccine symbolized a turning point, a step closer to breathing easier (maybe even without a mask eventually), traveling and hugging grandparents. 
The Times-Union spoke with newly eligible vaccine recipients this week to reflect on how the last year impacted them and what getting the shot means to them.
One mask instead of two at school 
With people as young as 16 and 17-years-old now eligible, a number of Jacksonville s newly inoculated population are still in high school.
