Heavy rain is expected this weekend in many parts of the country, with MetService issuing a rare red severe weather warning for most of Canterbury. Red warnings are reserved for only the most extreme weather events. Much of Canterbury can expect downpours which could cause dangerous river conditions and significant flooding, MetService said. “Slips and floodwaters are likely to disrupt travel, making some roads impassable and possibly isolating communities,” MetService warned on Friday. Rain was also expected to be heavy in Nelson west of Motueka, and could also get heavy in the Richmond Range, eastern Bay of Plenty, Taranaki about and north of the mountain, northern Canterbury and Marlborough south of Ward. ....

Dunedin s hill suburbs have now been included in MetService s forecast for snow Tuesday morning. Until yesterday, Dunedin was not expected to get snow like the rest of Otago and Southland. However, meteorologist Ashlee Parkes said the updated forecast now showed snow showers would fall to 300m around Dunedin. ....

MetService says snow could fall to as low as 700m in the Canterbury High Country on Tuesday. The weather this weekend is likely to be changeable across much of the country, but for many areas that’s better than the conditions forecast for the first few days of next week. MetService is forecasting snow down to 500 metres in Southland on Monday and to 300m on Tuesday, and around Dunedin to 600m on Monday and 400m on Tuesday. Westerly or southwesterly winds could also get to gale strength about the coast in both areas. ....
