As the executive director of EPIC and someone who is currently suing Caltrans twice for projects on Highway 197/199 and at Richardson Grove, I can’t believe I am writing this, but: Caltrans is doing an impressive job with the Last Chance Grade Project. Recently, Caltrans announced it had narrowed its range of alternatives to just two options for the Last Chance Grade Project. Take it from someone who has been watching this project develop for over five years: This is a big deal. While EPIC normally would be upset that an agency has limited the scope of study to just two ....
On January 23 rd of this year, a potential Bigfoot sighting occurred just south of Garberville, California, on highway 101. A man named Rick Bates made the sighting between Benbow Inn and Richardson Grove. In his report explaining his sighting, Mr. Bates wrote in part, “The road makes a few turns and the speed limit drops in the area. As I rounded a sweeping right hand turn I saw a figure on the south bound shoulder of the highway. I was the only vehicle in the area about 8:15 PM. My speed was about 45-50 MPH as I passed the figure.” He went on to describe the creature, “The figure was laying on the shoulder of the road on its right side. I estimated the height to be about 7’. I was looking at the creature’s back and noticed it had broad shoulders and was thick torso shape. While the shape [was] similar to a human it was not human. It was not a bear either. I could see muscular features in its glutes and a head on the shoulders that was somewhat tapered towar ....
Posted By Elaine Weinreb on Mon, Dec 28, 2020 at 10:58 AM click to enlarge Caltrans Broadway has long been an integral yet neglected part of Eureka. As a road that serves both as a state highway and as a city “Main Street,” it fills neither role satisfactorily. Half of all automobile accidents in Eureka happen on Broadway. This 3-mile stretch of road, which serves 35,000 vehicles daily, has been the site of regular fatal collisions, including three this year. Local residents complain the road is ugly, difficult and dangerous to cross, and gives an unpleasant first impression to visitors coming into Eureka from the south. Motorists complain of long delays at traffic lights, left turns that are difficult and dangerous, and pedestrians dodging traffic as they jaywa ....
The only real difference will be HOW the trucks get here. Currently they deliver to everything south of Richarson Grove from the south. They deliver everything north of the Grove from the north. This means there are more trucks traveling through Eureka going to Garberville, etc. because they can’t get there from the south. These trucks are everywhere and that won’t change. The only change will be a savings in fuel and therefore shipping costs would be lower with the improvement project. Less miles equals less emissions. That should actually make the environmentalists happy. Environmentalists are the problem, not the solution here. They lack consistency and reason. But, then, so does the BOS generally speaking. ....
