Covid vaccine misinformation target of Pitt study

University of Pittsburgh researchers are investigating online misinformation relating to the covid-19 vaccines, thanks to a grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation. The goal is to create “beneficial and educational messaging about vaccines,” the university said.
“We wanted to see what are some of the reasons why we’re seeing some of the trends we’re seeing,” said Beth Hoffman, a Ph.D. student in Pitt’s Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences, and one of the lead researchers. “And also, what are some of the ways we can make sure people are getting the correct information?” ....

Richard King Mellon Foundation to award $1.2B in Pittsburgh region over 10 years, seeks public input

The Richard King Mellon Foundation, the region’s largest philanthropic organization, plans to give away $1.2 billion over the next decade, its director announced Wednesday.
And it will continue a new practice in doling out the old money by soliciting public input on where it will do the most good.
The foundation aims to “increase opportunity and prosperity in Southwestern PA, and to advance environmental conservation and stewardship across the United States” through its new strategic plan, Director Sam Reiman said. Last year, the foundation awarded $130 million in grants. ....

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 22, 2021 /PRNewswire/  The Advanced Leadership Initiative (TALI) and Carnegie Mellon University are pleased to announce the launch of the 2021 cohort of the Executive Leadership Academy, which is beginning its third year. The Executive Leadership Academy (ELA) is TALI s signature program and part of an ongoing effort to build a pipeline of African American leaders who are prepared to contribute to their organizations and communities at the highest level.
This year s 28 cohort members were selected based on applications from some of Pittsburgh s experienced and highly accomplished African American leaders. Greensburg plans to help businesses and individuals with covid relief money

Greensburg plans to use nearly $194,000 in federal CARES Act money to aid small businesses, provide rent assistance and help feed those in need.
Municipalities received coronavirus relief funds through the existing Community Development Block Grant program.
Greensburg submitted its application about three months ago, and recently learned it had been accepted, according to Mayor Robert Bell.
Greensburg’s plans for the money have not been finalized, but leaders have determined three priorities, Bell said.
The city will partner with the Greensburg Community Development Corporation, spending about $100,000 of the Cares Act money to help city businesses struggling due to the pandemic. ....

Dec. 18 Now that the COVID-19 vaccine has arrived, health care facilities that distribute it need a way to keep it very, very cold.
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine introduced in the U.S. earlier this week requires an ultra-chilly storage temperature of minus 70 degrees Celsius, and a vaccine from Moderna, expected to receive Food and Drug Administration approval Friday, requires storage conditions of minus 20 degrees Celsius more like a typical household freezer.
UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh plans to purchase the cold-storage units needed to maintain the vaccines’ efficacy with a $250,000 grant awarded recently by the Richard King Mellon Foundation. ....
