Florida Department of Economic Opportunity Announces Floridaâs Withdrawal from Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation Program

Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) announced another key step to returning more Floridians to work, following April’s labor statistics which show total private-sector employment increased by 18,800 jobs and more than 460,000 online job postings available throughout the state for job seekers. Florida will end its participation in the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program, the $300 per week supplemental FPUC payment, effective June 26, 2021, as part of DEO’s ‘Return to Work’ initiative.
Note that the additional federal Reemployment Assistance benefit programs, including Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC), and Mixed Earners Unemployment Compensation (MEUC), will continue for the time ....

FWC move forward on reopening Goliath fishery

Despite being split as a board, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission agreed to move forward with a plan to allow limited harvest of Goliath grouper, which has been closed to harvest since 1990.
Commissioners Rodney Barreto, Robert Spottswood and Gary Lester seemed to favor reopening the fishery to a limited harvest, while commissioners Mike Sole, Steve Hudson and Gary Nicklaus argued against it at this time. Commissioner Sonya Rood opposed allowing harvest of Goliath groupers from artificial wrecks and spawning areas that are home to large concentrations of lumbering fish can weigh in excess off 300 pounds.
However, the commission voted, with Sole being the lone dissenter, to move forward with allowing a strictly regulated and severely limited harvest of the species. Nicklaus and Hudson said they voted only to bring the issue back for the board for further discussion. ....

FWC continues ongoing goliath grouper efforts
At its May meeting, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) listened to a presentation and stakeholder input on goliath grouper in Florida state waters.
The Commission directed staff to continue ongoing efforts that recognize goliath’s role in the ecosystem and promote stock rebuilding while allowing access to goliath through catch-and-release, ecotourism and dive viewing opportunities.
They also directed staff to develop a proposed draft rule for consideration by the Commission at a future meeting that would build on existing access opportunities for goliath by considering a limited, highly regulated harvest.
“We should applaud our successes,” said FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto. “I’m in favor of coming back with a very delineated list of line items for a limited take that wouldn’t disturb the dive industry and would provide additional access to this fishery. Just because we’ve been doi ....
