Five years ago, an Austin consulting firm assessed the possible harm that disasters, natural and manmade, could inflict on San Antonio. It recommended that the city-owned San Antonio Water System buy generators to back up its pumping stations in case of significant power outages.
In a 2015 report commissioned by the city and written with input from the water utility, disaster consulting firm H2O Partners said the generators could prove useful during a calamity caused by a terrorist attack, tornado or winter freeze. SAWS could keep clean water flowing to residents, businesses, hospitals and police and fire stations. ....

A week after winter weather crippled the state s electric grid and knocked out power and water to residents, Bexar County officials are beginning to assess how CPS Energy and the San Antonio Water System might have fallen short in responding to the emergency.
At the same time, SAWS is paying a public relations firm owned by Bexar County Commissioner Trish DeBerry, who took office in January. DeBerry’s firm, the DeBerry Group, signed a one-year, $175,000 extension on its marketing contract with the water utility last October, while DeBerry was running for office. ....

Five water distribution sites at pump stations in San Antonio will remain open for a few more days to help people dealing with broken water pipes, a spokeswoman for San Antonio Water System said Monday.
Bulk water pickup have now switched to self-service. The limit is 5 gallons per person, and people must bring their own clean containers. ....
