Appellate court favors Newark over Jefferson in watershed land tax Jefferson Township and the city of Newark are headed back to court. Newark sued Jefferson over taxes on 4,000 acres of watershed land it owns. Jefferson reassessed all property in 2010, which Newark challenged and lost at trial. The Appellate Court reversed the ruling last week and sent it back for further proceedings. The 4,000 acres in Jefferson are part of the 35,000-acre Pequannock Watershed, a collection of streams and reservoirs purchased by the city of Newark in 1900. It is located in six municipalities in Morris, Passaic and Sussex counties. Newark bought the land for the water as its own supply was not potable due to pollution from the many manufacturing facilities. ....

A man turned himself in after a murder in Gateway on Monday, Lt. Shannon Jenkins with the Benton County Sheriff s Office announced.The Bentonville Police Department gave a tip to the Sheriff s Office about a possible homicide at an address along U.S. Highway 62 in Gateway.When deputies arrived, they found Robert Blau, 38, dead.During the investigation, Glenn Thatcher, age 44, turned himself in, according to Jenkins.The victim’s wife, Kirsten Blau told 40/29 News she and the victim knew the suspect who turned himself in. She said she wants to honor her husband’s life tonight. “He was a good man, he really was, he did his best to make everyone smile,” said Kirsten Blau. Thatcher is being held in jail on charges of capital murder.Jenkins told 40/29 no other information is currently available for release. ....
