Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL) on Friday inked a pact with the Karnataka Forest Department to fund latter’s afforestation programme at Bengre Deemed Forest area near Tannirbhavi, off the city. The company will fund ₹1.45 crore for the department’s efforts to raise a plantation at the identified location under the agreement. The department plans to plant 4,000 saplings of different species in an area of 10 hectares at Bengre. MRPL has taken up the project under its corporate social responsibility. MRPL directors Pomila Jaspal (Finance) and Sanjay Varma (Refinery), executive directors M. Elango (Refinery) and B.H.V. Prasad (Projects), CVO Rajeev Kushwah, divisional forest officer V. A state-of-the-art vermicompost facility that can convert 90 tonnes of solid waste into about 24 tonnes of compost was inaugurated on the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL) campus here on Monday. Joint Secretary (Refineries), Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Sunil Kumar inaugurated the facility that has three vermicompost units set up at a cost of ₹ 1.4 crore, said a release. Spread over about 2,000 acres of land, MRPL campus generates significant amount of solid waste in the form of fallen leaves, cut grass, vegetable waste and office waste such as paper. MRPL and Dr. Shivaram Karanth Pilikula Nisargadhama, which manages the park, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the same on Tuesday. Elango M., Executive Director (Refinery), MRPL, and Gokuldas Nayak, Executive Director of Nisargadhama signed the MoU. Accordingly, MPRL will spend ₹4.16 crore on fodder for 1,200 wild animals and also veterinary facilities and medicines to the animals at the park. ....
