Rabbi Shulman tenants express concerns about hotel mix-up as move out process continues

SOUTH BEND — A recent miscommunication involving the South Bend Housing Authority and Holiday Inn hotels has irked some residents of the Rabbi Shulman Apartments as the housing authority continues to move residents out of the building before a March 8 deadline. Ahead of expected cold temperatures earlier this month, the housing authority contracted with Holiday Inn for hotel rooms so residents in the Rabbi Shulman building would not be in rooms without adequate heat during the cold spell, the housing authority said. Over Valentine’s Day weekend, about 20 residents who were staying at the hotel chain’s location on Indiana 933 had to move to a different Holiday Inn on the south side of town off Ireland Road when the Roseland location was bought out for a Notre Dame hockey game.

South Bend Housing Authority working with Rabbi Shulman tenants to move them quickly

SOUTH BEND — Tenants of the Rabbi Shulman Apartments have still not been given their 60-day notice to move, but the South Bend Housing Authority says it’s working with them to get them out as soon as possible. “If it was left up to me, it would have been yesterday,” housing authority interim Director Tia Cauley, said. “We need to get that building empty.” Gas problems in the six-story building on Western Avenue that houses 112 tenants were discovered in October. Now the residents need to move out so the building can be assessed. There is no exact timeline for getting everyone out at the moment, Cauley said, but they are trying to do everything they can to get the residents out quickly. Residents have not been given an official 60-day notice requiring them to vacate the property, Commissioner Steve Luecke said; rather the housing authority is working with them on a volunteer basis to start.
