1962年，雷锋因公殉职。1963年1月20日，《前进报》摘录发表32篇雷锋日记，这首诗被当成了雷锋的日记发表出来。雷锋共对诗进行了三处修改：原诗中的“母亲只能生我身”改成“母亲只生了我的身”；“党号召我们闹革命”改为“共产党号召我闹革命”；删除了诗中的最后四句。《前进报》刊登这首诗后，多家报纸也做了转载。
