Issue of abandoned buildings is still unresolved

08 Februarie 2021 06:18 This building at the corner of Andries Pretorius and Jubilee Crescent was declared a problem building several months ago.Photo: Yaseen Gaffar The City of Cape Town is escalating the issue of abandoned buildings and vacant land that belongs to national government. This was revealed by Alderman Stuart Pringle, Subcouncil 24 chairperson, during his opening address at the first subcouncil meeting of the year. “These properties are simply left abandoned at vast expense to the fiscus,” he said. “We will continue to pressure these national departments to get to grips with the property they own and decide what they wish to do with these assets.”

There's gold in that sand, says local treasure hunter

Deur Yaseen Gaffar 08 Februarie 2021 06:13 Cornell Swart with a fistful of treasures found at Gordon’s Bay main beach while metal detecting.Photo: Yaseen Gaffar The hobby of metal detecting has returned in full swing at local beaches in the Helderberg, and it didn’t take long for one such enthusiast to make a “decent find” at Gordon’s Bay main beach on Tuesday (2 February). Cornell Swart (42) proudly showed off a fistful of “treasures” she found along her walk. It consisted of what appeared to be old coins and rings, one with a 9 ct engraving that could well mean a nice payout, but will have to be cleaned and inspected first.

Deur Yaseen Gaffar 01 Februarie 2021 06:19 A file photo of Aimée and her crew taken last year. Its skipper and crew hope it will be on the water soon.Photo: Yaseen Gaffar Six fisherman were flung into the sea and survived to tell the tale when the boat they were in, known as Aimée, capsized in the deep sea near Kogel Bay last Wednesday (20 January). Skipper Clive Leibrandt and all his crew had donned life–jackets and were able to stay afloat as surrounding fishing boats dashed to their rescue, pulled them on board and towed the boat back to Gordon’s Bay Harbour, where the NSRI provided additional support and medical assistance.

Development to straddle river

Deur Yaseen Gaffar 01 Februarie 2021 06:21 Residents have expressed concern that high concrete walls built along the boundary of Hathersage Farm by the City of Cape Town to protect the area from flooding makes it unreasonable that a development should take place here.Photo: Yaseen Gaffar Developers of Hathersage Farm in Somerset West have proposed to develop a further 157 erven and 75 apartments on the three portions of land – of which the environmental impact assessment (EIA) by Guillaume Nel Environmental Consultants is now open for public comment until next Monday (1 February). A second round of the public participation process and submission of the second draft Basic Assessment Report is expected to open in March and close in April.
