Federal and local authorities were working Sunday to tow away a dead gray whale that washed up on the Pacifica State Beach shore Friday afternoon, officials said.
Officials at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito said they received a report of a dead whale rolling in the surf at Pacifica State Beach at about 3 p.m. Friday. It was the 12th dead whale to wash up on a San Francisco Bay Area beach this year, according to authorities. ....

West Marin prepares for extreme drought

Creeks are dwindling, reservoirs are draining, and water suppliers are sounding the alarm.
Marin declared a drought emergency this week, the latest step in a crisis that will only deepen into the summer. Water providers large and small are conserving and creating backup plans, and they are searching for new sources of water. Prospects of outside help are diminishing, so suppliers are turning to their customers to save them from running dry.
“You only have to drive by Nicasio Dam or Stafford Lake to see the dire conditions we are facing,” Supervisor Dennis Rodoni said. “Drought conditions are the worst we have seen in over 140 years in Marin. Please take this drought and recommendations from the water agencies seriously. While we have plenty of water for health and safety of our families, it is important that we do not waste any water.” ....

Muir Beach saw many visitors and a gray whale carcass on April 17, 2021.Three more gray whales have washed up dead in the San Francisco Bay, adding to the fatal beachings of five others in the region over the last month, including a 46-foot fin whale, scientists from the Marine Mammal Center and the California Academy of Sciences said Thursday.
In 2019, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced it was going to investigate an unusually high number of gray whales found dead along the North American west coast. The investigation is continuing.
Although the number of dead whales may seem alarming, the numbers are actually lower than they have been the last two years, said Michael Milstein, an NOAA spokesman. ....

3 More Dead Gray Whales Found in San Francisco Bay: Marine Mammal Center

The most recent whales won t have their causes of death determined because of inaccessible or unsafe locations, and the Marine Mammal Center is in talks with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration about possibly safely towing the whale carcasses into the open ocean so they can naturally decompose there.
Over the last few years, our experts have observed gray whales frequenting San Francisco Bay in greater numbers and for longer periods of time. These whales are at increased risk from human activity, which is why we are committed to better understanding the ongoing challenges and threats these animals face, Kathi George, the center s director of field operations and response, said in a statement. ....
