There are just an estimated 3,200 fin whales in the waters off of California, Oregon, and Washington. Friday, one of them was found lifeless along the beach at Fort Funston having likely died from a boat strike.
Between a Super Cyclone (that was hinted as the Bay Area s best chance to get out of drought conditions) and an increasing number of dead whales washing ashore around San Francisco, it s a worrying sign of the hellacious times we’re in. Gray whales are on the move with their calves in tow.
The majestic marine mammals have begun their springtime migration north along the California coastline, escorting their 1,000-pound newborns from Baja’s shallow lagoons to Alaska’s arctic waters.
The whales’ northbound voyage takes them closer to shore than their southern sojourn, meaning Bay Area residents may catch a glimpse of the mottled giants with or without binoculars (though binoculars are recommended). The parade of migrating pairs will pick up this month, peaking in early to mid-May. ....

Another whale washes up dead in SF - this time at Fort Funston

A 45-foot finback whale washed up at Fort Funston in San Francisco on Saturday morning, drawing a small crowd of onlookers and their dogs.
The male juvenile whale was not moving and was later pronounced dead by marine scientists.
Mark Gagan of San Francisco said he spotted the whale at the edge of the surf while he was walking his dog, Maisy. He said a small crowd had gathered.
“People are pretty somber,” he told The Chronicle. “It’s sad to see a majestic, beautiful animal in a condition like that.” ....
