Although Greg Villareal is moving from Miami to Albuquerque, this will be a move of comfort.
The 40-year-old, who graduated from McCurdy Charter School in Española and who is the nephew of Volcano Vista girls basketball coach Lisa Villareal, has been named as Sandia High School’s new volleyball coach.
Villareal has spent most of the last 20 years coaching in south Florida, most recently as the boys volleyball coach at Braddock High in Miami.

Weâre at an important juncture regarding the education of the New Mexico s children. Itâs early in the semester, weâre administering vaccines at a great pace and the infection rate is dropping at a nice pace.
This has prompted Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to give the go ahead for in-person learning. The reaction to the announcement has been tepid at best. The Pojoaque Valley School Board voted at its January meeting to remain in remote learning for the rest of the school year. Española School Board Feb. 3 did a lot of talking but took no action to get students back into the classroom. McCurdy Charter School leaders are leaning toward a March 1 hybrid start. Theyâre set to discuss it at tonightâs (2/11) Board meeting.
McCurdy Charter School awarded a cash prize to their staff in a Pay for Performance Initiative.
Each staff member received $1,000 for meeting the school requirements. The total cost to the School was just over $55,000 according to McCurdy Director Sarah Tario.
The requirements for the incentive were successful remote learning that met requirements and state standards, and above 80 percent student engagement in remote learning.
âWeâre not allowed to pay a bonus, but you can do a pay for performance where you set those specific goals,â Tario said.
The Charter School Governance Board approved the payments at a Jan. 14 meeting.
McCurdy has been closed since March 16 when the Governor ordered schools closed. Since then, the charter school has saved on utility bills and some staff payments, among other areas.
