Two food factories in Penang found with poor hygiene standards

NIBONG TEBAL: Two food manufacturing factories here with have been found to be operating under poor hygiene conditions.
One of them, producing a variety of cereal products, had just resumed operation after being ordered to close and clean up after a Health Department raid two weeks ago.
Penang Health Department environmental health, food safety and quality officer Mohd Wazir Khalid said while inspections this time found hygiene standards have improved from the last inspection, it was still unsatisfactory.
We inspected the factory about two weeks ago and its hygiene was way below standard.
It was issued a notice to close for about a week (then) under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983 to clean up, and fined them RM3,500. ....

Foo chuk factory full of flies, with a dead kitty

NIBONG TEBAL: A bean curd skin (foo chuk) factory that has been operating illegally at Sungai Jawi here for around four decades was raided by Health Department investigators, who were shocked at what they found.
After they gained entry yesterday, the place was not only swarming with flies, but the carcass of a dead kitten was also found lying mere metres from where workers prepared foo chuk for drying.
When Penang Health Department environmental health, food safety and quality officer Mohd Wazir Khalid asked a worker why the carcass was left unattended, she answered that “the kitten just died there” and they were “too busy to remove it”. ....
