Gravity-based batteries try to beat their chemical cousins with winches, weights, and mine shafts

Gravity-based batteries try to beat their chemical cousins with winches, weights, and mine shafts
Apr. 22, 2021 , 2:35 PM
EDINBURGH, U.K. Alongside the chilly, steel-gray water of the docks here stands what looks like a naked, four-story elevator shaft except in place of the elevator is a green, 50-ton iron weight, suspended by steel cables. Little by little, electric motors hoist the weight halfway up the shaft; it is now a giant, gravity-powered battery, storing potential energy that can be released when needed. And that moment is now: With a metallic moan, the weight inches back down the shaft. Reversing direction, the motors become electric generators, sending up to 250 kilowatts of power back to the grid. For peak power, the weight can descend in 11 seconds but for testing purposes, it moves just a few meters at “creep speed,” says Douglas Hitchcock, project engineer at Scottish startup Gravitricity.   ....

It was one of the saddest days for Australian literature when the great Peter Temple died in 2018. He was the first crime writer to win the Miles Franklin and he took crime writing onto a new level.
He wrote five standalone novels, including the Miles-winning
Truth, and four featuring his Fitzroy-based fixer of all sorts of problems, Jack Irish. The Irish novels were adapted for the small screen with Guy Pearce and the series will be making a final appearance on the ABC later this year. ....

On the spectrum of minimalism versus clutter, Emily Maguire considers herself somewhere in the middle. “I definitely hoard books, it’s an emotional attachment, and I am sentimental about photographs and drawings by nieces and nephews,” she concedes.
“But when it comes to clothes, I’d rather not think about them at all. My parents were very utilitarian, and we had no money for luxuries so our furniture was basic and Dad fixed everything to make it last. I was mystified by friends at uni who would talk about stuff like chairs.” ....

Sydney Writers' Festival 2021 program

The coronavirus pandemic might have offered no shortage of plot twists for the Sydney Writers’ Festival, but it has also given the annual literary event a chance to turn over a fresh page.
Interim artistic director Michael Williams says his first program reflects a shift away from the seduction of international guests and the mindset they are what makes or breaks writers’ festivals.
While there will be virtual events with high-profile authors – including Nobel Prize-winner Kazuo Ishiguro, Pulitzer Prize-winner Isabel Wilkerson, young adult favourite Judy Blume,
Outline trilogy author Rachel Cusk and Australian expatriates Peter Carey and Geraldine Brooks – the program is built around in-person events featuring local writers from April 26 to May 2. ....
