Food and agriculture have been subject to heavy-handed government interventions throughout much of history and across the globe, both in developing and in developed countries.  Today, more than half a trillion US dollars are spent by some governments to support farmers, while other governments impose regulations and taxes that hurt farmers. Some policies, such as price regulations and tariffs, distribute income but reduce total welfare by introducing economic distortions.  Other policies, such as public investments in research, food standards, or land reforms, may increase total welfare, but these policies come also with distributional effects.  These distributional effects influence the preferences of interest groups and in turn influence policy decisions.  Political considerations are therefore crucial to understand how agricultural and food policies are determined, to identify the constraints withi ....

WHO funds Irish study of spread of virus through food


Ever worried that you might catch Covid-19 from a frozen smoothie? The World Health Organisation is funding Irish scientists to investigate whether the coronavirus can be transmitted through food and food packaging.
A group of scientists at University College Dublin is researching whether uncooked foods such as frozen berries and fresh vegetables can harbour or transmit the virus. The study also extends to the packaging.
The good news is that, although the research is ongoing, scientists have found no evidence thus far that the virus can be transmitted through food.
The main route of Covid-19 transmission is through person-to-person contact, in airborne respiratory droplets spread by coughing, sneezing and talking. But concerns have been raised that the virus could spread through food packaging and in certain foods. ....
