[email protected] The former Christ Reformed Church at 12th Avenue and 15th Street will be demolished soon to create a parking lot for Curry Realty, city Director of Codes and Inspections Rebecca Brown told the Altoona Planning Commission this week. Curry is renovating the former Vipond building nearby to create a headquarters for its operations, now based in Morrisons Cove, along with leased space for Saint Francis University engineering and business programing and a financial tenant. Curry submitted a land development application for the parking lot on the church property Monday, Brown said. The building, which is near the city’s police station, should be demolished within the next few weeks, she said. ....

Aisha Haire/Haire’s Famous Gulf Shrimp Finnie Haire, the founder of Haire’s Gulf Shrimp on the city’s South Side, has died of kidney failure, according to his wife. Haire first launched the iconic shrimp shack in the early 1980s out of a train caboose and is remembered as an charismatic entrepreneur with big dreams for his beloved brand. Haire, who died on January 26, was 80. The restaurant, perched near the corner of 75th Street and Vincennes Avenue in Greater Grand Crossing, is the latest home for the nearly 40-year-old business. It’s a no-frills counter-service spot that’s sold fried shrimp by the bag (called “bomb bags”) to generations of local fans and visitors. They can also find cole slaw, fries, and spaghetti, but regulars know the real star: fresh and golden fried shrimp. The food made Haire a celebrity. According to an obituary, Haire was also the first Black food vendor at Comiskey Park, the home of the Chicago White Sox. ....
A former evangelical Christian looks back in pain Updated January 24, 2021, 2:30 a.m. Email to a Friend Millions embrace a higher purpose, and theyâre not storming buildings Reading Monica Roddenâs condemnation of evangelicalism (âWould I have stormed the Capitol?â Ideas, Jan. 17), I am reminded of how dangerous it is to make universal generalizations from the contours of oneâs mind and apply them wholesale to a large group. Rodden writes that she was born again in her adolescence, but this confuses a ritualistic practice â praying a prayer of confession, walking to the front of a church â with a spiritually transformative inner experience that has always been a foundational element of biblical Christianity. Now in her postmodern skepticism about objective truth, she is left only with her own mental projections for what is true and what is not. ....
