[email protected] The former Christ Reformed Church at 12th Avenue and 15th Street will be demolished soon to create a parking lot for Curry Realty, city Director of Codes and Inspections Rebecca Brown told the Altoona Planning Commission this week. Curry is renovating the former Vipond building nearby to create a headquarters for its operations, now based in Morrisons Cove, along with leased space for Saint Francis University engineering and business programing and a financial tenant. Curry submitted a land development application for the parking lot on the church property Monday, Brown said. The building, which is near the city’s police station, should be demolished within the next few weeks, she said. ....
[email protected] Saint Francis University will become a partner with Curry Realty in a major redevelopment project downtown, according to information presented at a meeting of the Altoona Planning Commission on Tuesday. The university will be conducting aspects of its engineering and business programs in the first floor of the former Vipond building on the 1400 block of 11th Avenue, which Curry has been renovating for two years and which it expects to complete by August, according to Curry consultant Ron McConnell, a former local hospital executive. The expectation is that the engineering labs and simulators in the building whose top two floors will become headquarters for the Curry companies, now based in Morrisons Cove will help generate talent for the firm, whose business includes heavy duty, off-road trucks and rail cars, according to McConnell. ....

Starting in March, the staff and board members of the Altoona Blair County Development Corp. could only react to the crisis, managing emergency grant programs, forgiving loans, deferring rents and referring unemployment claims, said President and CEO Stephen McKnight. Nevertheless, in 2020, ABCD Corp. facilitated 52 business financing projects that represented nearly $17 million in total capital investment and nearly $6.3 million in program funding.
