Stockholm hosts online Nobel Prize award ceremony


STOCKHOLM, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) For the first time in history, the Nobel Prize award ceremony was streamed online on Thursday from Stockholm s City Hall due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This years laureates are: Roger Penrose, Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez (physics); Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna (chemistry); Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice (physiology or medicine); Louise Gluck (literature); and Paul R. Milgrom and Robert B. Wilson (economics).
The winners received their awards at their homes.
In his address, Carl-Henrik Heldin, chairman of the Board of the Nobel Foundation, said: It is gratifying that, during a year when humanity is being subjected to such major hardships, new Nobel Laureates could be announced this October. And we are glad that we have been able to bring the Nobel Prize medals and diplomas to you Nobel Laureates, in your home countries, when it is not possible for you to come to us in Stockholm. ....

Meet the Canadian writers and researchers who deserve to win the Nobel Prize


This builds on the 2018 chemistry prize which went to Frances Arnold for her application of genetic engineering to create new proteins to benefit humanity. And in physics, Andrea Ghez received the award for the discovery of a black hole in the centre of the Milky Way. Canada’s own Donna Strickland received the Nobel in 2018.
With the Nobel in literature going to Canada’s Alice Munro in 2013 and this year’s award to American Louise Gluck, Canadians eagerly await even further recognition for Margaret Atwood, a double winner of the Booker prize.
