Commission: We need large investment, better plans for Cumberland parks


CUMBERLAND – This town’s parks and recreation services are understaffed and underfunded, say members of the Parks and Recreation Commission, and a general lack of information on how money is spent makes it difficult to analyze how to improve the situation.
Commission Chairman Alan Neville, pictured, and member Dan Stevenson updated the Town Council last week on a number of items that they and Town Solicitor Kelley Morris Salvatore were asked to look into starting in December.
Communities such as Smithfield and South Kingstown provide a “much more granular view” of parks and recreation functions, said Neville, creating detailed narratives and setting benchmark expectations for what’s going to be accomplished in a given year, including the number of personnel needed to carry tasks out and other useful information. ....

Live music, theater events are back this spring

On Saturday, May 8, Pawtucket-based TEN31 Productions will host a magical afternoon at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center, 1 Floral Ave. in Providence, with their Wonderland in the Gardens event featuring live-action “Alice in Wonderland” characters based on Sir John Tenniel’s original sketches from the 1865 edition. From 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. people are invited to this family-friendly event to see talking characters including the Chesire Cat, Alice, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the Red Queen, and more.
“It’s going to be a walk-through experience, so you get to enjoy the garden,” Joe Pari, co-founder of TEN31 Productions, told The Breeze. “Many people don’t know there’s a rose maze at the back of the Botanical Center. The Red Queen will be there doting on her roses.” While it will be fun for the children, “it’s still going to be really cool for adults,” Pari said. “The costuming is really beautiful.” ....

Cathy Parkes, whose father, Paul Parkes, died of COVID-19 last year while living at Orchard Villa Retirement Community, is pictured near her home in Pickering, Ont., on Thursday.(Evan Mitsui/CBC)
The day before Cathy Parkes s father died, she went to see him through the window of his Pickering, Ont., long-term care home.
Paul Parkes, 86, had been suffering from a urinary tract infection and wasn t getting enough water.
A personal support worker said he wouldn t take fluids. Cathy asked if her father could be sent to hospital. She says the home refused.
I saw what he looked like in his casket when we had the viewing and he was a completely different man than what I had seen just weeks before, she told CBC News. ....
