El Cajon plans to use more federal funds to help homeless individuals

El Cajon mulling over how best to use American Rescue Plan funds

EL CAJON    El Cajon is in the early stages of planning what to do with about $34 million it is receiving from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The relief plan, signed into law by President Joe Biden on March 11, included $350 billion in financial assistance to state and local governments. The precise amount of financial aid to local governments is determined by a modified Community Development Block Grant formula that considers such factors as population, poverty level and housing needs. El Cajon will receive half the money this year and the other half in 2022, according to a staff report presented to the City Council last week. All funds are required to be expended by Sept. 30, 2024.
