Board Denies CAFO Based on Neighbor Proximity

The Palo Alto County Supervisors would deny the conditional use permit for a hog confinement near Greattinger during Tuesday’s regular session board meeting. The permit for a proposed 2,499 hog capacity finishing barn was denied because the site did not meet Palo Alto County’s Good Neighbor policy of a half-mile distance from residents.
“The site does have one neighbor within the half-mile, and currently the Good Neighbor policy waiver has not been signed,” said Aletha King, Zoning, presenting details of Monday night’s zoning board decision to the supervisors. “The zoning board denied the permit because of the distance with the neighbor and the waiver not being signed.” ....

Supervisors Discuss Frustrations Over COVID Vaccine Scheduling

“We have seen a little bit of an increase,” began Sarah Strohman, director of Palo Alto County Public Health, providing an update on county COVID-19 numbers to the Board of Supervisors Tuesday morning. “We currently have 33 active cases of COVID-19 in the county and a 14-day average of 10 percent. We’ve had 19 deaths in Palo Alto County.”
Public Health held its first county COVID vaccination clinic at the VFW in Emmetsburg on Tuesday, Feb. 9, and according to Strohman, the clinic was very successful.
“We had our VFW clinic for 65 and older and vaccinated 200 people that day. It was a huge success. We’ve already got their appointments made for their booster vaccine in March. That worked very well.” ....

State Police crash Northern Michigan township meeting for violating COVID-19 rules

WHITEWATER TOWNSHIP, MI – A township board meeting was interrupted this week when police showed up to enforce COVID-19 rules.
Michigan State Police responded to the Whitewater Township Board meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 8, WPBN/WGTU reports. Police had received several calls alleging the meeting in Grand Traverse County was in violation of state COVID-19 rules requiring local governments to meet virtually.
The meeting was hybrid with some people attending via Zoom and others coming in person, said township Supervisor Ron Popp. Troopers asked the trustees to halt the in-person portion of the meeting and take it all online. In response, some people left while others stayed, he said. ....
