From the Desk of Public Health By Staff | May 18, 2021 Last week, the Palo Alto County Board of Health met in regular session and discussed the mask mandate for our county. It was voted on and approved to continue to mandate mask wearing throughout the county until the next Board meeting in June. By continuing the mask mandate, we are able to provide protection and ensure that our children are able to finish their school year, attend graduation ceremonies and celebrate their achievements. At this time, our positivity rate remains low at 5% with four newly reported cases in the last seven days. I say reported cases, because there are many family members who are ill and not getting tested because they know they have had an exposure. Our total cases to date is 1,183 and we have lost 21 county residents to COVID. ....
Board Discusses COVID Vaccine by Joseph Schany “We continue to stay pretty low with our county positivity rate,” began Sarah Strohman, Public Health director, updating the Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors on COVID numbers during Tuesday morning’s meeting. “Our current positivity rate in Palo Alto County is 2 percent. We currently have five active cases in the county.” According to Strohman, to date 1,179 total cases of COVID and 21 deaths have been reported in Palo Alto County, and the numbers seem to have become manageable. “I am super happy about that,” she said. According to Strohman, the current positivity rate in Palo Alto County is at 3 percent, with five new cases in the last seven days. As of Tuesday morning, April 27, Palo Alto County has had 1,173 total cases of COVID since the pandemic began. Unfortunately, 21 individuals in the county have died due to COVID. Vaccine As of this week, 31.7 percent of Palo Alto County has been vaccinated. In the county’s 65 and older population, 72 percent have received vaccination, while 41 percent of those aged 18 -64 have been vaccinated. ....
From the Desk of Public Health Vaccination Important For County Protection Against Coronavirus By Staff | Apr 13, 2021 Last week’s big news from Iowa Department of Public Health was the opening up of vaccines to all people ages 18 and older for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, and 16 and older for Pfizer. It is exciting that we finally are seeing enough vaccine availability in the state to be able to take this next step. Now that there is plenty of vaccine available, it is the responsibility of our county members to take steps to getting yourself vaccinated as soon as you can. We hear a lot in the news about herd immunity and the need to reach that in order to beat this pandemic. Because of this, I wanted to address the topic today. Herd immunity is defined in the medical community as a form of protection that occurs when people in a community become immune to a disease.
