(Photo Illustration) PARKERSBURG City officials recently allocated more than $20,000 to the West Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness to support the organization’s efforts in the area. “They have proven helpful in getting people into safe, suitable, affordable housing,” Mayor Tom Joyce said. The coalition is a Bridgeport-based nonprofit that leads efforts to prevent and reduce homelessness in 44 of West Virginia’s 55 counties. It’s been doing outreach work in the area for about three years, with an expansion of efforts in the last eight or nine months thanks to funding from a federal State Opiod Response grant, said Ellie Johnson, the coalition’s supervisor for the grant. ....
Ohio Valley ReSource Caseworkers who work directly with West Virginia’s homeless population conducted the annual point-in-time count last week, measuring the number of individuals experiencing homelessness on one of the coldest nights of the year. “Most people who are going to be sheltered are sheltered during the last ten days of January,” said Matt Hedrick, who coordinates the count for the West Virginia Coalition to End Homeless. “The people we find on the street… have nowhere else to go.” The count measures people either staying in shelters or on the street. And it has been adapted to keep volunteers and clients safe from transmitting COVID-19. ....

John Meeker, of Shepherdstown, spearheaded the organization of two Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service events, which were the Presidential Inaugural Committee’s recommended replacement for less pandemic-friendly celebrations this month. While the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service traditionally takes place on Monday, the events encompassed the entire federal holiday’s extended weekend. ....
