PARKERSBURG City officials recently allocated more than $20,000 to the West Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness to support the organization’s efforts in the area.
“They have proven helpful in getting people into safe, suitable, affordable housing,” Mayor Tom Joyce said.
The coalition is a Bridgeport-based nonprofit that leads efforts to prevent and reduce homelessness in 44 of West Virginia’s 55 counties. It’s been doing outreach work in the area for about three years, with an expansion of efforts in the last eight or nine months thanks to funding from a federal State Opiod Response grant, said Ellie Johnson, the coalition’s supervisor for the grant. ....

“Most people who are going to be sheltered are sheltered during the last ten days of January,” said Matt Hedrick, who coordinates the count for the West Virginia Coalition to End Homeless. “The people we find on the street… have nowhere else to go.”
The count measures people either staying in shelters or on the street. And it has been adapted to keep volunteers and clients safe from transmitting COVID-19. ....

SHEPHERDSTOWN Over the weekend, Shepherdstown was a flurry of activity, as community members gathered together to celebrate the upcoming presidential inauguration with acts of service.
John Meeker, of Shepherdstown, spearheaded the organization of two Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service events, which were the Presidential Inaugural Committee’s recommended replacement for less pandemic-friendly celebrations this month. While the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service traditionally takes place on Monday, the events encompassed the entire federal holiday’s extended weekend. ....

Beacon Awards shines a light on young W. Virginia leaders

The task force worked to identify the factors behind those numbers and then looked at models that appeared to work well in other communities. The results prompted Rexroad to launch the United Way of Harrison County’s Solution-Focused Street Outreach and Rapid Rehousing Programs - just as the COVID-19 pandemic was hitting West Virginia. Shelters were being forced to limit their services statewide at the same time that an increasing number of people were becoming homeless due to economic conditions.
“We decided to gear up for an outreach effort,” in conjunction with the West Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness, said Rexroad, now the Housing and Communications Director for United Way of Harrison County. “We screened the entire population that we had outside and we pulled the highest risk folks … into a hotel where they could quarantine. Ten folks at that time who were highest risk. Folks who are older, folks who have chronic health conditions, and we put them in a ho ....
