State Rep. Greg Howard, R-Stonington, had nominated Konicki, who also heads the Ocean Community Chamber Foundation, for the award. The commission specifically wrote that when the pandemic began in March 2020, many business owners, employees, residents, and the community at large quickly grew anxious. (AP) About 80 birds died of smoke inhalation in a fire early Thursday at a Rhode Island bird sanctuary, but hundreds of others survived, fire officials said. Firefighters responded to the blaze at the Foster Parrots Ltd. and the New England Exotic Wildlife Sanctuary in Hopkinton at about 5:30 a.m., Ashaway Fire Assistant Chief Todd Allen told The Sun of Westerly. Foster Parrots posted on its Facebook page that 80 to 100 birds and other animals died in the fire and “a third of the building is in ruins.” “Staff and volunteers are numb with grief and shock,” the organization said in the post. ....

Power of Together 2, which formed in 2016 as an offshoot of a similar East-Lyme based group, made its latest donation $10,700 to FRESH New London last Friday. Gae Melford, one of the group s organizers and co-founders, said that while people may donate $50 or $100 on their own to a local organization, they can have a larger impact if they pool their donations. They didn t know much else about the coronavirus disease, which is not to say they were unprepared. “One of the big challenges was our lack of knowledge about the virus and how it behaved,” Dr. Deidre Gifford, acting commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Public Health, said Friday, reflecting on the statewide response to COVID-19. “We were learning about the disease as the pandemic played out. Guidance was evolving in real time.” At the outset, she said, there were no therapeutics, no vaccines. A lot of cases had to be managed before widespread testing was available.
