The usual pleasure of booking for a show and anticipating a great night out has been replaced, this past year, by a new, painfully frustrating experience. You book, the Prime Minister gives another “Alas…” address, the show gets postponed, you rebook for a future date, Boris speaks again, the show gets postponed - and repeat, ad nauseum.
Now imagine the stress of box office workers at the other end of the phone, who probably heard this news at the same time as you, fears for their job, and is now handling a constant stream of queries from annoyed customers wanting to know how the latest lockdown or tier change affects their booking. ....

So the theatre industry is gritting its teeth once again. As we plunge once more into national lockdown, an anonymous theatre producer confided to me: “It feels like we’ve gone back from recovery mode to survival mode”.
Certainly the implications of the virus variant(s) and questions about vaccine roll-out are enough to daunt even the most battle-hardened in the industry which has been more or less shut down since London was plunged into tier 3 in mid-December. I asked several leading players about a timeline in terms of reopening, first with social distancing then the holy grail of reverting to the norm of this time last year. “We are as in the dark as everybody now,” confesses Julian Bird, chief executive of SOLT (the Society of London Theatre) and UK Theatre (the key body for regional playhouses). ....

Inspired by the 2007 animation about a culinarily inclined rat, this new show was crowd-sourced on the popular social-media platform

Ratatouille the TikTok musical
Has the most significant American musical of the year already happened? The word “phenomenon” is used with giddy abandon about cultural happenings, but it has a tang of truth in the case of Ratatouille the musical – or Ratatousical, as some are calling it.
Based on the much-loved 2007 Pixar/Disney animated feature – about a sensitive, morsel-savouring rat called Remy who develops a rare culinary aptitude (thereafter taking the world of Parisian haute cuisine by storm) – it landed on New Year’s Day for a 72-hour window of streaming opportunity. Such was the demand to see it that this “concert” benefit premiere has raised more than $1m for actors and behind-the-scenes workers (via the Actors Fund). ....
