A determined Gerrit Smith – wealthy, well-known abolitionist born and bred in Utica – comes out swinging, taking his fight against the evils of slavery to the polling place.
Smith, president and one of the founders of the New York State Anti-Slavery Society, meets with members at a session in Utica and together they adopt a resolution that compels political candidates to make known their attitude toward slavery. Smith says that candidates who favor the immediate abolition of slavery can count on the support of the thousands of society members. Wishy-washy candidates not committed fully to the abolition movement will be opposed vigorously by the society. ....

When she was a pediatrics resident at Stanford University doing her rounds on the hospital wards or seeing patients in her continuity clinic, Eliana Perrin always had many questions for her supervising physicians questions about why certain children came into care sicker than others, or how the challenges some patients encountered in their day-to-day lives affected their health.
One astute attending told me, You ask lots of questions, and you ask the kinds of questions that can t be answered at the bedside, Perrin remembers. The attending physician recommended that Perrin pursue research training to learn how to investigate difficult questions like these and begin to think more upstream than busy clinical practice allows. ....

Metro OKs county homeless plan; Portland begins collecting tax

The Metro Council voted 6-1 to accept Multnomah County s implementation plan for the Supportive Housing Services tax.
Multnomah County has cleared a key hurdle between itself and at least a billion dollars in new tax revenue over the next decade.
The Metro Council approved the county s Supportive Housing Services local implementation plan by a vote of 6-1 during a virtual meeting Thursday, April 29, with Councilor Mary Nolan casting the lone no vote.
The question my vote answers today is, Will this plan, if implemented as presented, achieve and deliver the results within the 10 years that the voters have generously given us to end homelessness in our region? said Nolan, who represents downtown and North Portland. I come to the conclusion that it will not. ....
