Chula Vista Police to Give Updates on Missing Mom Maya Millete – NBC Los Angeles

NBCUniversal Media, LLC
At a news conference Friday morning, family members and Chula Vista s police chief made emotional calls for help finding May “Maya” Millete, a mother of three who has been missing since Jan. 7.
During the event outside Chula Vista s police headquarters, police chief Roxana Kennedy, Chula Vista mayor Mary Salas and Millete s sister Maricris Drouaillet and her husband, Richard Drouaillet, all asked for anyone who knew any details about Millete s disappearance to come forward.
Absent at the news conference was Millete s husband, Larry Millete. Earlier this week, NBC 7 reported that he had retained a lawyer and was no longer cooperating with the investigation. ....

A little over a month ago, many of you probably heard or read about a very contentious meeting of San Diego’s new city council.
The meeting focused on who would be the next City Council president. It featured seven hours of public testimony and nearly 300 community speakers. The vast majority called in to support Councilwoman Monica Montgomery Steppe for the top post because of her leadership on racial justice and equity issues and deep community involvement .
Unfortunately, those requests fell on deaf ears. The council majority instead went with Councilwoman Jennifer Campbell for the post, despite Campbell making some truly baffling comments about racial justice during the same meeting. ....

Chula Vista City Councilman John McCann continues raising money to retire debt from his 2014 campaign.
McCann, a Republican, won a bitterly fought race against former Mayor Steve Padilla, a Democrat. The two candidates ended up tied on election night, and after a few rounds of re-counts and challenges, McCann emerged the winner by a margin of only 2 votes.
During the campaign leading up to the election, McCann raised a total of $41,129 but ended up spending $99,075.  The majority of the outstanding debt was for campaign mailing services totaling $40,662, as well as $5,000 win bonus to his political consultant. ....

LOS ANGELES — Weary after months of sleeping on other people s couches, Martha Escudero walked through the broken door of an empty home in Los Angeles El Sereno neighborhood and started bringing it back to life.
She fixed the garbage disposal, turned the garage into a classroom for her 11- and 8-year-old daughters and harvested squash and sweet potatoes from a vegetable garden she planted.
Her homesteading, part of an organized effort by tenant activists in March, was illegal, but it worked. The Los Angeles Housing Authority this fall granted occupancy rights to the family of Escudero and others who had seized numerous homes that the state acquired as part of now-abandoned plans to extend the 710 Freeway. ....
