2020 in review: Top stories of the year in Orange County education

It’s been tough for students this year.
With schools closing in March and remaining that way through much of the rest of the calendar year, parents, teachers and students have grappled with what is the best way to learn in the midst of a pandemic and how to bring kids back into classrooms safely.
But, in spite of the obstacles, people have found ways to still celebrate the accomplishments of their children this year.
Here are some of the top stories in education in Orange County in 2020:
Corona del Mar High School was closed, along with all other Newport-Mesa Unified School District campuses, in March. Secondary schools didn’t reopen until November. ....

Arsenal and Spurs fans' 13-mile walk for Islington food bank

Arsenal and Spurs fans came together ahead of the North London derby to raise thousands of pounds for The Hive Food Bank in Hornsey Rise.
On December 1, 15 people from the AFTV channel and other Spurs fans, including Jack Fowler, completed a 12.98-mile fundraising walk - a distance representing the parameter of the borough of Islington.
The five-hour walk took place on two treadmills inside the offices of AFTV media, due to Covid-19 restrictions, with the participants rotating.
Most people walked for around 15 mins, although Laura Howard-Harmer, AFTV production manager, admitted that “some people we made to do a bit more, a bit faster, we had a bit of fun with it”. ....

Martha “Marty” McLaren, a past West Seattle/South Park representative on the
Seattle Public Schools Board of Directors, has died. Ms. McLaren, a Puget Ridge resident, was 76 years old. She was a longtime educator and community advocate, but her highest-profile role was that of board member. She won election in 2011 by unseating incumbent
Steve Sundquist and then four years later was unseated herself by current board member
Leslie Harris. We talked with Ms. McLaren after her election in 2011; she spoke of her teaching career following her involvement with advocacy as a PTA leader while her children were in school. More details on her life are in her obituary, which we’ve just received: ....
