SPOKANE, Wash. Spokane Mayor Nadine Woodward received her first dose of COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday and said she hopes other people will, too.
Woodward became eligible on April 15, when the state opened up eligibility to all Washingtonians 16 and older. She visited a Providence clinic at Gonzaga University to get her first shot.
“I specifically wanted to come to the site here at Gonzaga University because our uptick in cases is in the younger demographics – 29 and under, and so we need to do everything we can to encourage them to get vaccinated,” Woodward said. ....

SPOKANE, Wash. A state audit of Spokane’s Community, Housing and Human Services (CHHS) Department found instances of mishandling money and conflicts of interest, which the Auditor’s Office attributes to a former City Council member.
According to the city, findings included issues of procurement, subrecipient agreements, conflicts of interest and the gifting of public funds.
The State Auditor’s Office (SAO) reports CHHS circumvented City policy when it came to awarding contracts ordinarily, the city posts ‘requests for proposals’ (RFPs) on their website, then performs risk assessments and evaluate proposals from potential
subrecipients, or contractors. After this, they would choose a subrecipient and award them the agreement for example, allowing an organization to run a homeless shelter for the city. ....

SPOKANE, Wash. Just over a year ago, Mayor Woodward announced a third-party audit of the city’s Community, Housing and Human Services Department. On Monday, the City of Spokane will go over the findings of that review.
According to the city, the audit was conducted by the State Auditor’s Office. It was requested after Mayor Woodward said conversations with current CHHS staff gave the city “pause.”
Former city administrator Wes Crago was, at the time, in charge of that inquiry.
CHHS handles homeless and housing programs for the city, but Crago had no answers for 4 News Now’s questions; whether this review stemmed from the city’s contract with Jewels Helping Hands, whether money was mishandled or whether it had anything to do when then-outgoing CHHS director Kelly Keenan stepped down in the fall of 2019. ....
